No Schengen Visa Appointments Available in the UK: What to Do
TL;DR
"No appointments" usually means every slot released so far is taken, not that none will appear. Apply for the right country, book within the 6-month window, check every UK centre your destination accepts, and watch for cancellations: they appear at any hour and often go within minutes. Italy is booked through VFS's Italy Global app, not the website.
"No appointments available": what it actually means
When the VFS Global portal for your Schengen destination shows no dates, it almost always means every appointment released so far has been booked, not that the centre has closed its calendar. New appointments are added as consulates open capacity, and booked ones come back when other applicants cancel or reschedule. Both happen at unpredictable times, and in busy months a returned slot is often taken within minutes.
So the question is less "is there a slot?" and more "will I see the next one before someone else does?"
Check these first
1. You are applying to the right country. Under the EU Visa Code you apply to the country of your main destination (where you will spend the longest), or, if the stays are equal, the country you enter first. Applying to a different country because it has dates is a common reason for refusal.
2. You are inside the booking window. Most Schengen states accept a short-stay application up to six months before travel and no later than 15 days before. If your trip is more than six months away, the calendar may simply not be open for you yet.
3. You are on the right portal. For Italy from the UK the appointment is booked in VFS Global's Italy Global app (iOS, Android), not on the website. For most other destinations it is the destination's VFS Global page for the UK.
4. You have checked every centre you are allowed to use. Some destinations accept UK applications at more than one centre (London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham). Check your destination's VFS page for which centres it allows from where you live before travelling to another city.
5. This is a short-stay (Type C) visa. National (Type D) visas, residence permits, study and digital nomad visas often go through different processes and calendars.
How people actually get a slot
Refreshing the portal by hand works only if you happen to look in the minute a slot appears. What works is being told the moment availability changes, with your documents ready so you can book on the spot.
That is what Schengen Alert does: it watches the VFS Global portals and sends you a WhatsApp message when an appointment opens for your city and destination. You then book it yourself on the official portal. We do not book for you, and no one can legitimately sell you a guaranteed slot.
On our busiest UK routes, almost every subscriber so far has received at least one alert:
An alert is a slot you had the chance to take; whether it suits your dates is up to you.
While you wait
- Have every document ready now. The documents checklist and the proof of funds guide cover what the centre will ask for. When a slot opens you want to book, not start gathering papers.
- Book travel you can cancel. Smart booking covers refundable flights, insurance and hotels.
- Know what happens at the appointment. See the visa interview guide.
